When we hire, we look for the best attorneys and staff: professionals who can help us grow while growing their careers. We are a medium-size firm representing high profile clients and issues in the areas of business, insurance, finance, technology, health care, and government. For us, success is defined from our clients’ perspectives. We work to achieve it promptly, effectively, and ethically. That’s why we’re known for our professional excellence, high standards, and broad social responsibility.

The work environment is very important to us. We strive to create a workplace that is rewarding, enjoyable and diverse. We want people whose common bond is excellence, but who otherwise have varied talents, experiences, and passions.

We strive to create a truly collaborative environment where teamwork and support are paramount. This begins with the way we structure our Summer Associate Program and continues through our mentorship program for our full-time associates.

Associate Attorneys

Summer Associate Program
Our summer associate program is our primary way of recruiting and hiring entry-level attorneys. Summer associates are usually law students who have completed their second year of school, although the recruiting and interviewing process begins the previous fall. Summer associates generally join us for 10 to 12 weeks between May and August. During their time with us, summer associates are given the same types of assignments that our entry-level associates are given, so that they gain a good understanding of what will be expected of them as practicing attorneys. This also gives us an extended opportunity to evaluate skills and fit with the firm. Summer associates are teamed with a summer associate coordinator who helps to guide them through their first months in the firm. The coordinator is usually an associate who has also been through the summer associate program. Previous summer associates, and especially those who have subsequently been offered full-time associate positions after graduation, have reported that our summer associate program not only provided them with substantive legal training, but also an excellent introduction to the legal community in general, and HLGR in particular.

Full-Time Associates
HLGR typically hires one or two new associates per year. The entry-level positions are typically filled through our summer associate program. Associates who are offered a regular associate position are assigned a supervising attorney who works in their particular practice area and works with them on client matters. Our associates are also paired with shareholders from different practice areas who serve as their mentors. This dual approach helps our associates quickly gain valuable experience and substantive knowledge in their assigned practice areas, as well as learn about other areas of law and the firm in general.

Application Process

To apply for a summer associate position, students at the three Oregon law schools should contact their school’s career services office and apply through the fall on-campus interview process. Otherwise, students or qualified candidates for lateral positions may submit cover letters and resumes via email to: Ms. Chris Hardy, Hiring Assistant or mail to: 1001 SW 5th Avenue, 16th Floor, Portland, Oregon 97204, attention: Hiring Partner, Josh Stump. Inquiries will be held in strict confidence. For further information about any opening, please contact Josh Stump at (503) 242-0000.
